Vitrum Industries, a glass fabricator in Langley, British Columbia, announced the launch of a sister company, Apex Aluminum Extrusions Ltd., also in Langley. With production slated to begin in March, the new company will focus on extrusions for building related products. According to a company announcement, the decision was made to launch Apex because of the potential synergies of supplying aluminum extrusions to Vitrum's existing customer base.

“This was an important move so that we can strengthen the relationship that we have with our current customers, and to bring on new customers who are looking for a higher level of quality and service from their aluminum extrusion supplier,” Thomas Martini, chief executive officer, tells USGNN.com™. Martini is also a company co-owner along with Gemma Vipond. “For the past two years our customers have discussed their concerns about their current extrusion suppliers, especially with the need for another local supplier. We feel that our timing is correct to bring to market another option for our customers so that they have a strong comfort level knowing that they have a high-quality supplier with a long-term commitment to this market, not only in fabricated glass but also in aluminum extrusions,” Martini adds.

According to Martini, the new factory is 80,000 square feet and will operate an 8-inch, 2750 metric ton front loading extrusion press. At start up, Apex will have 20 employees.

“Apex is in the process of commissioning the most state-of-the-art extrusion facility in Canada, and has been established to supply high-quality products, with short lead times to the local market,” Martini adds.

Bill de Koning will server as general manager and brings with him many years of experience in the aluminum extrusion industry. Previously, de Koning spent 20 years with Indalex and served as general manager of the company’s Western Canadian locations.

While for some, given the slow construction market, this may not be an ideal time to start a new company, de Koning says the time is indeed right for them.

“In my opinion, now is a good time to invest as the construction market will return and when it does we will be ready,” he says.
