Amherst County - What a difference a week can make. Last Friday night, the E.C. Glass girls and boys lost their district tournament title games. Now they've both WON region semifinal games and qualified for the state tournament.
Wednesday night the girls won, Thursday night the Glass boys beat Staunton River. Glass A.D. Chip Berry was decked out in his Hilltopper blue. The Golden Eagles stayed right with Glass for three quarters, Jarodd Nichols nice dish to Rodney Kasey for the bucket AND the foul. The Hilltoppers led by eight after three, then broke it wide open in the fourth. Najee Culver poured in a game-high 25 points. Malcolm Owens added 13 as Glass outscored Staunton River 22-5 in the final quarter. Sophomore Karl Overstreet chipped in seven for the Hilltoppers. Toppers win 59-34, the Glass boys advance to Saturday's region title game and are headed to states for the first time since 1996.
Najee Culver said "It means everything to us. I mean E.C. Glass ain't been to a state championship in basketball in a long time and everybody on the team is glad to be there."
E.C. Glass Head Coach Roy Roberson said "I can't be more proud of this group of kids. And I think they don't want it to end and I don't think they're content, I think they're still hungry for more success."
