China Glass NetworkGary Grober, John Vaile and Joe Elder, from left above, get in position to install a piece of glass 80 feet in the air in the new Missoula International Airport air traffic control tower on Thursday. The crew from Big Mountain Glass is lifting each of the 16 pieces with a crane, attaching it inside and out. Each piece of the custom-made glass weighs 550 pounds, measures approximately 9 feet by 6 feet, and costs $3,500 to manufacture. Shaun Shea, project manager with Morrison-Maierle Inc., said the glass should all be in place by Friday. The project is ahead of schedule, and the tower should be operational by early summer of 2012, Shea said. The project replaces the airport's 52-year-old control tower.
