A new crafts training center believes in striking while the iron’s hot.

The Rochester Arc & Flame Center, which opened earlier this month at 125 Fedex Way (in Gates, off of Manitou Road), teaches glass blowing, blacksmithing and welding in more than 35 programs at levels ranging from beginner to professional.

Glass art has long been popular in western New York, thanks to the Corning Museum of Glass, local glass-making studios and a strong program at Rochester Institute of Technology’s School for American Crafts. Mumford’s Genesee Country Village & Museum also has introduced many visitors to blacksmithing through its 19th-century displays.

The new center offers a glass flame-working studio, a glass kiln shop, a blacksmithing shop with six coal forges, a welding laboratory with 16 welding stations and a large gallery for local artists to exhibit their work.
