Salem Community College to offer summer glass workshops

Salem Community College will offer glass workshops this summer at its Samuel H. Jones Glass Education Center, 286 Welchville Road here.

“Rendering in Glass” will begin Thursday and Friday, May 10-11, and will resume Monday and Tuesday, May 14-15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., under the guidance of Jenna Efrain. Students create a series of pieces by focusing on pate de verre and small-scale kiln casting techniques. This workshop costs $650. No experience is required.

“Glass Sculpting in the Hot Shop” will take place Thursday through Sunday, May 24–27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Instructor Chris Lydon covers the basics of sculpting solid and blown glass, using a variety of techniques. The cost is $650. Some experience is required.

“Fused Mosaic Wall Mural: Be a Part of the Art!” will run Monday through Thursday, June 4-7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with instructor Deb DiMarco. Students design component panels which are used to fabricate a fused mosaic wall mural to be displayed at Salem Community College. This workshop costs $450. No experience is required.

“Concentric Blown Forms” will be held Thursday and Friday, June 7-8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This hot-shop class, run by Chris Lydon, focuses on vessel-making techniques and covers some bit work, including lip wraps and handles. This workshop costs $350. Some experience is required.

“Beginner Flameworked Beadmaking” will run Saturday and Sunday, June 16-17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Under the guidance of Amy Blevins, students learn about basic beadmaking, types of glass and proper safety techniques. The cost is $165. No experience is required.

“Nature in Glass” will be held on Wednesday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with instructor Mary Rodgers. In this nature-themed flameworking class, students create pendants and stoppered perfume bottle. The cost is $165. Some experience is required.  

“Exploring Metals in Your Beads” will take place on Wednesday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In this intermediate-level class run by Lisa St. Martin, students explore using various metals and economical materials to create unique beads. The cost is $225. Some experience is required.

“Exploring Dichro in Glass” will be held on Thursday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with instructor Lisa St. Martin. This intermediate-level class covers the use of dichroic glass in soft glass beads. The cost is $225. Some experience is required.

“German Glass Flowers” will take place on Friday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with instructor Lisa St. Martin. This course uses traditional German/European techniques to create a complete flower. The cost is $225. Some experience is recommended.

Students registering for Lisa St. Martin’s workshops — “Exploring Metals in Your Beads,” “Exploring Dichro in Glass” and “German Glass Flowers” — will receive a $67.50 discount.


“Building Solid Sculptures in Borosilicate Glass” will by taught by Eva Shelley on Saturday and Sunday, July 14-15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students learn the basics of building sculptures using borosilicate glass with a traditional scientific approach. The cost is $325. Some flameworking experience is required.
