Polk may reconsider glass recycling

Post Time:Jul 09,2008Classify:Company NewsView:293

There was an interesting article on glass recycling in the Orlando Sentinel today that explained how the glass market is so bad it's not worth shipping to recycling centers. Instead, it's ground up and used for landfill cover or something.

Polk recycling officials are struggling with the glass issue, too, and have even discussed excluding it from curbside recycling programs. That means it would go to the landfill instead and would generate revenue for the county instead of an expense, but it would also increase costs for garbage haulers. That's because there's a lot of glass out there and it's heavy.

Dare we revive the idea of bottle deposits? That could reduce the trash problem in another way and increase recycling in a way unknown in Florida for many years.
