Saflex Juniors Sailing Team Takes Second Places at Junior World Championships, Claims 2008 Junior New England Championship

ST. LOUIS – July 21, 2008 –Fresh from winning the 2008 Junior New England Championship at the Marblehead Yacht Club, Team Saflex, under talented skipper Ian Schillebeeckx, took second place in the 2008 Junior World Championships. Held last week in Montreal, Team Saflex represented the United States in the Lightning Class division.

Known globally as the world leader in performance interlayers for laminated glazing markets, Saflex has sponsored the Juniors Sailing team for the past three years. “Competitive, fast, high performance. These are all words that not only describe skipper Schillebeeckx’s team on the water but also Saflex in the global marketplace,” said Luc De Temmerman, President of Solutia’s Saflex business. “We are pleased to be able to continue to support Ian and his crew during the 2008 regatta season. At Saflex, our team commits tremendous energy and resources to developing products that improve people’s lives. This talented group of young sailors put a similar dedication and commitment into their sport, and we are proud to have them sailing under the Saflex name.”

With 80 years of leading laminated glazing technology, Saflex continues to make waves by establishing last month a new Photovoltaic business to serve the rapidly growing market for thin-film solar panels. Saflex brings scale, skill and speed to help solar module manufactures efficiently and rapidly ramp up thin film production.

The Washington, Missouri-based Schillebeeckx competes in the 19-and-under Juniors’ Lightning Class. Following his experience in the 2006 Lightning Junior Worlds Championship, sailed in Helsinki, Finland, the 2008 Team Saflex has attracted a new team to compete alongside Schillebeeckx, bringing stronger sailing experience and focused on one singular goal: winning the Lightning Junior World Championships 2008. Team Saflex had the lead until the last race of the competition and was nosed out by Team Lutz when the last race was shortened with 3 legs. “The key to a successful campaign is preparation, and an excellent team,” said Schillebeeckx. “Connor Aswad, front crew and Will Schwartz, middle crew brought great experience to our team this year. Overall, we are pleased with our performance at the Worlds.” The team also worked with Jim Young, U.S. Olympic Team coach and former Olympic Swiss Team coach to prepare for the racing season. Team Saflex will complete its racing season at the Junior North American Championship, which will be sailed this August in Newport, Rhode Island.
