Plans Approved for 1,350-foot Glass-clad Skyscraper in Manhattan

The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved plans from SHoP Architecture to build a 1,350-foot glass-clad residential tower at 107 West 57th St. in Midtown Manhattan, according to an Oct. 15 Curbed report. The tower will rise from the same site as the landmarked Steinway Building, causing concern for the landmark commission initially.

During a second presentation, SHoP proposed demolishing a smaller portion of the landmark and installing clear, single-layer glass on the 107 West 57th St. facade so that observers at street level would be able to look through and see the landmarked building, ultimately garnering support from the commission.

The tower is one of several ongoing projects in a "super tall building boom" in Midtown.
