Eighteen years afterHurricane Andrew caused devastating damagein Florida, Hurricane Test LaboratoryLLC, Riviera Beach, Fla., sponsored a surveyof glazing industry professionals to gain a current perspective on industry trends, according to a Dec. 9 release.

The survey showed that most glazing industry professionals believe the industry is moving in the right direction. If a hurricane hit today, 80 percent of respondents believe buildings built to current codes would survive in a “good” or “excellent” way. More than 50 percent of respondents believe that the majority of buildings and homes not built to current Florida Building Code specifications would be destroyed.

The vast majority (85 percent) strongly or generally agrees that Miami-Dade County is the most stringent and widely accepted code body for high-performance wind-borne debris glazing products.

However, opinion was split on whether people actively seek Miami-Dade certification. When asked if they would try to avoid testing to Miami-Dade County if there is an option, 44 percent said they would, while 44 percent said they would not.

The survey also covered topics including product and submittal pricing changes, the code-approval process, the insurance industry’s role in creating wind-borne debris standards, and major product changes in the past 18 years. “HTL was formed in 1993 to help manufacturers understand and comply with newly established building codes after Andrew. Since then, we’ve helped our clients develop and test hundreds of hurricane building products,” said Vinu Abraham, CEO, HTL, in the release. “While we know these products are on the market, we wanted to understand whether building professionals think products have improved enough to offer adequate protection against future hurricanes.”
