Health department’s refurbished head office will be energy efficient

The Department of Health would soon take occupation of its newly refurbished, and energy efficient headquarters in the Pretoria’s [South Africa]central business district, as contractor Grinaker-LTA said it neared completion of the R580-million [$60.8 million]project.The project, which would be handed over in April, was a joint venture between Grinaker-LTA and black economic-empowerment firm Keren Kula construction, and comprised a complete refurbishment of the 30-story Civitas building (originally built in 1971) and construction of a nine-story office tower alongside it.Both the refurbished Civitas building and the new office tower feature glass facades, which, as well as giving the old structure a modern look, the glass “curtain walls” were also designed to make the buildings more energy efficient, according to a March 30 report in Engineering News.
