PPI for construction outstrips rise in overall index

The producer price index for finished goods climbed 1.4 percentbefore seasonal adjustment (1.2 percentseasonally adjusted) in July and 9.8 percentover 12 months, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Tuesday. The PPI for inputs to construction industries—a measure of costs of materials used in all types of projects plus items consumed by contractors, such as diesel fuel—rose 2 percentfor the month and 12 percentover 12 months. By segment, the increases were greatest for highway and street construction, 3.8 percentand 21 percent; followed by other heavy construction, 2.1 percentand 17 percent; nonresidential building, 1.9 percentand 12 percent; multi-unit residential, 1.3 percentand 8.5 percent; and single-unit residential, 1.4 percentand 7.1 percent.
