Driven by a booming construction economy and strong growth in vehicle production, the demand for flat glass in China is expected to surpass demand in all other parts of the world by 2011, according to a forecast released Aug. 7 from the Bharat Book Bureau in Mumbai, India. Demand will increase 8.4 percent each year through 2011, when it will reach 9.5 billion feet. Measured in value, demand will increase 11 percent annually, reaching $12.6 billion in 2011, according to the forecast. Primary flat glass products make up 87 percent of the market, and demand for the segment is set to increase 8.8 percent annually, according to the report. The vast majority of demand in primary flat glass comes from float glass—drawn and rolled glass products are becoming more obsolete as the government continues to shut down inefficient and low-quality sheet glass furnaces, according to the report. Fabricated products—including insulating, tempered, laminated, mirror and specialty glass products—make up the rest of the market. Demand is expected to increase 12.5 percent annually for fabricated flat glass, according to the report. To read the full report, click here.Share this article:
