Large-size LCD panel shipments down 1% sequentially in 3Q08, says DisplaySearch

Post Time:Oct 31,2008Classify:Industry NewsView:491

Weak demand and inventory adjustments by TV makers reduced large-size TFT LCD panel shipments to 116 million units in the third quarter of 2008, down 1% sequentially, according to DisplaySearch.

The shipment of 117.7 million large-area TFT LCD panels in the second quarter of 2008 had been the largest number of large-size panels ever produced and shipped in a quarter, but that production contributed to over-supply in the supply chain, the research firm said.

Downstream clients have rapidly revised their demand forecasts since the second quarter, with panel suppliers cutting their production amid weak orders. Compared to on-year growth of 40% in fourth-quarter 2007, 42% in the first quarter of 2008, and 23% in the second quarter of 2008, the 7% on-year growth in the third quarter of 2008 indicates a slowdown in large-size TFT LCD shipments, DisplaySearch said.

DisplaySearch said panel makers are trying to maintain the same shipment volumes for fourth-quarter 2008 as those for the third quarter. They expect a 1% sequential decline in the first quarter of 2009, but most suppliers are planning to increase shipments in the second quarter, assuming that inventories will have been digested and economic conditions improve by then, the research firm noted.

Previous figures from WitsView showed that global large-size LCD panel shipments in the third quarter reached 105.3 million units, a sequential decrease of 4.9% and a mere 3.4% on-year growth.

On a unit basis, Samsung remained the shipment leader in large-area TFT LCDs with a 21.6% market share, almost unchanged from 21.5% in third quarter, according to DisplaySearch. Just behind Samsung for the third quarter were LG Display with 21.4% and AU Optronics (AUO) with 17.9%. AUO's share of unit shipments fell below 20% for the second time in seven quarters. Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) ranked number four with 15.1%, followed by Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) with 5.6%.

DisplaySearch and WitsView differ on the ranking in the monitor segment. While WitsView puts Samsung as the top monitor panel supplier in the third quarter, Samsung is only third place according to DisplaySearch's ranking for the segment.
