Glasstec opens in Germany

The 19th edition of the Glasstec International Trade Fair opened its doors today, welcoming exhibitors from almost 50 countries to a show that occupies nine halls at the Düsseldorf fairgrounds in Germany. About 1,190 companies will exhibit from countries including: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. More than 350 companies are first time exhibitors. “On a display area exceeding 63,000 square meters, [the companies] will demonstrate impressively the capacities of the international glass industry, the glass machinery and plant manufacturers, the glazier trade and the suppliers of the business sector,” said Joachim Sch?fer during the opening press conference yesterday. Sch?fer serves as managing director of Messe Düsseldorf, the organizer of the show. Fifty-five percent of exhibitors come from the machinery and plant manufacturing sector, occupying almost 40,000 square meters of exhibit space, said Siegfried Glaser, chairman of the Forum Glastechnik at the German Machinery and Plant Manufacturers’ Association, or VDMA, during the opening press conference. “At Glasstec, manufacturing processes and workflows can be seen live, or under practical conditions,” Glaser said. “Exhibitors at their stands will showcase the entire supply chain of machine-based glass production.” In addition to the tradeshow, visitors to Glasstec also can attend the Glass Technology Live special show and symposium. A main topic of Glass Technology Live revolves around energy-saving glass applications, said Johann Overath, managing director of Germany’s Federal Association of the Glas Industry, during the opening press conference. “Main topics will focus on the innovative options of functional glazing in the areas of energy saving and energy production,” Overath said. “Photovoltaics and solar thermal technology are gaining more and more importance [in the industry]. ” On Oct. 26, presentations at Glass Technology Live will be dedicated to photovoltaics and solar thermal technology in building. Today, presenters covered the engineering and technical research aspects of making and building with glass. Tomorrow, the topic is emotion, highlighting the use of light, color and texture with glass in architecture. On Oct. 27, attendees will learn about innovation in glass technology, including multifunctional insulation glazing. The program will close Oct. 28 with a focus on the application of glass in interior design, screen-printed glass and colored glass in architecture.
