BEIJING --China will unveil measures to boost its auto industry in the first quarter of 2009, the Shanghai Securities News reported Monday, without citing sources.

Measures include reducing or eliminating the purchase tax for autos based on the size of their engines, encouraging the use of alternative-energy vehicles, supporting auto financing, encouraging mergers and reorganization of the auto industry, and requiring a portion of government vehicle purchases to be of locally owned brands.

The National Reform and Development Commission has submitted the stimulus measures to the State Council for approval, the report said.
