After three decades at the helm of Acme Glass and Mirror Co., Inc., John Cooper still looks forward to the hum of a busy day at work.

“When it gets really, really busy and everybody tenses up, that is when it really gets fun,” Cooper said.

Cooper said he had worked in the retail business for 15 years when he decided it was time to get out. When an opportunity arose to get in the glass business, Cooper accepted, and the first Acme Glass and Mirror in Monroe opened in July 1984 in the “old bowling alley” on Louisville Avenue.

As the business grew it expanded with new locations and increased product offerings that now provide increased service to area businesses.

“We started out with full-line glass auto glass and residential,” Cooper said, “and then, when we moved over here (to Louisville Avenue and North 14th Street), we got into some of the showroom accessories. Of course we have expanded since we started and gotten more heavily into commercial. We did both the Interstate Dodge and Interstate Hyundai dealerships in West Monroe. We just finished the new Hixson dealership building. We also did the First National Bank.”

In 2015, the company opened a new location in West Monroe, a 7,500-square-foot building featuring an expanded show room, work room and inventory storage area. 2015 also saw the addition of eight employees in Ouachita Parish.

In 2016, Acme is being recognized as the Thomas H. Scott Award winner in the medium business category.

Over the years the business has grown from a three-employee operation with four partners to a 48-employee business owned by Cooper and his sons.

Two of Cooper’s sons, twins Chance and Coby, are heavily involved in the operation of the business. Chance spends more time in auto glass, according to Cooper, while Coby focuses more on commercial aspects.

The family enterprise also extended to Cooper’s wife, Sandy, whom he credits with building the business, until the twins came on board.

“I’ve backed out considerably and let them make a lot of the day-to-day decisions,” Cooper said. “I decided a year or two ago I was going to retire, but that lasted about a week.”

Both Chance and Coby have brought additional expertise into the business according to Cooper, who said Coby has obtained state contractor licenses as a general contractor and a glass and glazing contractor while Chance keeps up with auto glass industry updates by attending industry conferences.

Over the years, Acme Glass and Mirror has been involved with numerous charitable endeavors in the community as well as local business organizations. Both John and Chance Cooper expressed pride in providing mirrors, shower doors and windows as well as decorative furnishings for the annual St. Jude's Dream Home giveaways.

John said he particularly enjoyed his involvement with the Northeast Louisiana Homebuilders' Association, where he served on the board directors for 25 years.

In addition to its Monroe and West Monroe locations, Acme Glass and Mirror Co. also operates stores in Bastrop and Ruston.

The business is also a member of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, the Ruston/Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, the West Monroe/West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce, the Bastrop/Morehouse Chamber of Commerce, the National Glass Association, the National Auto Glass Safety Council and the Northeast Louisiana Better Business Bureau.
