Owens-Illinois to open new furnace

Owens-Illinois is to open a second furnace at its glass container manufacturing plant in Lurin, Peru.

The $30m (£14.7m) expansion, which is expected to be in full operation in the second quarter of 2009, will create around 65 new jobs in the region.

The company's president Jose Lorent said the growing demand for glass packaging, especially in agricultural exports and in domestic beer, had made the expansion necessary.

It will also open an engineering centre at the Lurin manufacturing facility.
