Post Time:Feb 19,2009Classify:Company NewsView:368

Forty tonnes of liquid glass spilt in a furnace during the blaze at the O-I Glass Factory, formally ACI, on Great South Rd in Penrose, Auckland. Firefighters have now left the scene, where 70 firefighters and 16 engines attended. "The leaks been isolated and the 40 tonne lava flow of molten glass has cooled," a fire service spokesperson said. The factory had been evacuated and no injuries have been reported. Mr Edwards said surrounding buildings had not required evacuation and the factory´s location meant there was no disruption to traffic. An eyewitness at the nearby Woodmart plant said a large amount of smoke was coming from the furnace part of the plant, but no flames. Great South Rd and the neighbouring Main Trunk railway line remained open during the drama but McNab Rd was closed and full of fire engines. Meanwhile, firefighters had to physically restrain a man who was trying to drive through the scene in an effort to get to his workplace.
