Global large-size TFT-LCD panel shipments totaled 23.8 million units in January this year, down 12.4% sequentially and down 33.5% on year, according to research firm Displaybank. Revenues for large-size panels in January were US$205 billion, down 10.7% sequentially and down 63.3% on year.
In terms of applications, LCD TV panel shipments increased by 220,000 units in January compared to the volume in December 2008, and the TV segment accounted for 3.4% of the total large-size shipments last month. The increase was mainly due to the increased demand in China and the better-than-expected sales in the US and Europe, Displaybank said.
In terms of revenues, Samsung Electronics was number one with a 27.9% share, followed by LG Display (LGD) with 27.8%. The two Korean vendors accounted for 55.7% of the large-size panel revenues in January, up from 43.7% in the same month of 2008, the research firm said.
LGD was the top supplier in terms of unit shipments, with a 26.4% share, followed by Samsung with 26%. Taiwan-based Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) ranked third with 13.8%.
According to Displaybank senior analyst Ricky Park, Taiwanese and Chinese panel makers had limited output in January due to Lunar New Year holidays and most panel makers' had healthy inventories after adjustments in previous months. He said panel orders for February have been increasing and panel makers have been gradually increasing utilization. Park added that the shipments in February and March 2009 are forecast to increase by 10% on a monthly basis.
