Costs of building materials continue to fall

Construction materials costs continued to decline last month, according to a report by the U.S. Labor Department. Materials prices fell 0.3 percent in January, the fourth consecutive month that prices have declined. However, prices were still 1.8 percent higher than in January 2008.

Fabricated structural metal products prices declined 1.4 percent from January, but were still 4.3 percent higher than in January 2008. Prices for ferrous wire products fell 0.8 percent from last month and softwood lumber dropped for the fifth straight month, down 3.5 percent from December. In addition, prices for asphalt felts and coatings declined for the third straight month, down 2.5 percent; they were still 50.4 percent higher than a year ago.
