2009 marks JE Berkowitz, LP’s (JEB) of Pedricktown, NJ tenth consecutive year of compliance as an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certified company. The most recent surveillance audit achieved a perfect score and confirmed the company’s commitment to quality and continuous process improvement!

Ten years ago JEB was furnished a grant by the New Jersey Department of Labor to become ISO certified along with 18 other companies. JE Berkowitz was one of only three companies to successfully complete the program, recognized as a first for the fabrication and distribution of architectural flat glass products. The application cycle proved to be a struggle in the beginning with growing pains involved in implementing the new procedures. These days ISO certification is a way of life for the company, a quality standard of processes and services known to the international markets. “We continually ready ourselves for audits,” says George Smith, ISO Coordinator for JE Berkowitz, LP, “We constantly strive to improve all our procedures.”

The company has strictly adhered to the ISO principles over the last decade while implementing its guidelines and good business practices. These practices were demonstrated in their move from Westville, NJ to the new 200,000 square-foot high-tech plant and offices in 2007. The move was nearly seamless and reaffirmed their commitment to ISO. As a result of the move, ISO required a relocation audit. “Any organization with significant change is obligated to have an audit,” stated John P. Gaughan, Lead Auditor of KEMA Registered Quality, Inc., “JEB passed the inspection without difficulty. They chose to invest in a qualitative business and, because of this, they are able to profit in existing and future markets.”

The company has continued with three major ISO updates, progressing from 9002:1994, to 9001-2000, to the most recent 9001-2008 revision. “JEB is on the cutting edge of ISO with a sophisticated quality management system. The employees have internalized the system so that quality is everyone’s responsibility,” stated John P. Gaughan. The company has adopted supplemental programs to coincide with their ISO commitment including customer forums and surveys. As a result, JEB has made multiple improvements to areas that include management standards, education and training and standards for all aspects of architectural glass fabrication. “As a progressive company, ISO has provided JEB with the tools and systems needed to advance our quality and services on a continual basis,” says Michael Nicklas, JE Berkowitz, LP Sales and Marketing Manager, “It has been a key factor to our success.”
