Small- to medium-size LCD panel outlook remains unclear despite improved shipments

Although shipments of small- to medium-size LCD panels by Taiwan makers have seen improvements recently, makers are still conservative over the order visibility in the coming quarters.

Demand from the handset sector in China as well as from leading international handset players have helped boost small- to medium-size panel shipments, with some makers seeing their shipments increase at a 20-40% range, said industry sources.

Makers seeing improved shipments include Wintek, AU Optronics (AUO), Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) and Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT), the sources noted.

However, most makers noted that the improved shipments were caused mainly by rush orders and the current shipments remain at off-season levels.

Taiwan's economics minister Yiin Chii-ming has also contended that it is still too early to say that the island's TFT LCD panel industry is heading for a recovery, as rush orders received by the makers recently have simply been a response to declining inventory, rather than a sign of a business rebound.
