Global large-size TFT-LCD panel shipments in the second quarter of 2009 are expected to increase by 20.9% sequentially to 91.46 million units, according to WitsView. First-quarter shipments are estiamted at 75.66 million units, down 10.8% compared to the fourth quarter of 2008.

Large-size panel shipments started to show encouraging signs of growth at the beginning of 2009. And as inventory remains low in the supply chain, rush orders continue to show up, fueling optimism toward the TFT-LCD market outlook, the research firm noted.

LCD monitor demand in the second quarter is expected to be underpinned by inventory restocking, and order visibility has been extended to May this year, WitsView said, noting that shipments and prices for 16:9 aspect ratio monitor panels are expected to increase amid tight supply.

As notebook vendors plan to release new models in the second quarter, the research firm expects the new models to drive up the demand for notebook panels.

Shipments of 32-inch and smaller LCD TV panels are expected to continue to grow in the second quarter due to delayed purchases from last year and demand from China government's consumer electronic promotion program. For the 40-inch-and-above segment, shipments are also expected to increase due to the release of new models, WitsView said.
