Fenton Glass Will Halt Production for Several Weeks

The economy is forcing a Mid-Ohio Valley glassmaker to halt production for a month.

Fenton Glass in Wood County will furlough 120 employees on Monday. The decorative glassmaker, which is more than 100 years old, is suffering from the recession and low demand for product.

Fenton President George Fenton told the Parkersburg News Saturday that production is not expected to resume until May 8.

The company has suffered economic problems for several years. In the summer of 2007, the company announced it would close its doors following 102 years in business. But a surge of last-minute orders managed to keep the doors open. By December 2007, the company said it would remain open.

Fenton is not the only glassmaker to suffer the economic recession. Blenko Glass shut down production earlier this year, but gradually resumed production in March.

Fenton officials say the gift shop will remain open while the factory is idled.
