Sharp Corp. (6753.TO) said Monday it has signed a memorandum of intent with the Chinese city of Nanjing and a local company about a joint venture to produce LCD panels using advanced 8th generation glass substrates, in a bid to cope with increasing demand.

The Japanese consumer electronics maker also said it has signed an agreement to provide technological assistance and production equipment using 6th generation technology from its Kameyama plant No. 1 in Japan to a separate Chinese LCD panel project.

The new 6th generation plant is slated to kick off operations by March 2011. The financial value of the project was not immediately available.

The move comes after South Korea's LG Display Co. (LPL) and China's BOE Technology Group Co. said last week they plan to invest in eighth-generation liquid crystal display manufacturing plants in China to tap growing demand in the mainland.
