Botswana sees geotechnical work begin at glass manufacturing plant

Geotechnical construction work is underway in Botswana in a major project expected to boost the country's economy.

Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) is hoping to establish a glass manufacturing plant in Palapye, with preparatory work having begun in July.

The plant aims to take advantage of Botswana's impressive amount of raw materials, which will result in the manufacture of glass such as silica and soda ash.

BDC principal public affairs officer Boitshwarelo Lebang said the initiative represented a "good investment opportunity".

"The decision to venture into float glass manufacturing is in line with government's strategy of beneficiation of raw materials before export for the overall benefit of the county's economy."

The project is currently in the geotechnical and civil works stage.

Palapye was chosen as the location of the plant because it is home to Botswana's only coal mine - with energy being a major requirement of glass manufacturing.

One of the country's largest recent construction work projects was the delivery of Gabarone's Diamond Technology Park.
