Port of Kalama wine bottle plant shutting down

A company that makes wine bottles has shut down its plant at the Port of Kalama.

Port spokeswoman Mindi Lindquist says only a few of the 100 workers are staying on a few days following Sunday's shutdown to help with the closure.

The Daily News of Longview reports the Washington, Pa., Cameron Family Glass Packaging company owes about $50,000 in missed lease payments to the port dating back to a Jan. 4 accident.

Molten glass leaked from the plants 470-ton smelter and 40 firefighters worked 16 hours to minimize structural damage. Since then, the plant had restarted bottle production.

When Cameron opened the $109 million factory in late 2008 it said it was the first such U.S. glass plant in 35 years.
