Glass imports from China threaten local jobs

Post Time:Oct 15,2009Classify:Industry NewsView:384

Glass manufacturing jobs, like those at Osram-Sylvania in Wellsboro, are at risk from heavily-subsidized Chinese imports.

A recently released report by a Harvard University professor, Dr. Usha Haley, details the connections between the rise in Chinese glass imports to the United States, the energy subsidies provided to Chinese glass companies and the decline in employment of glass producers in the United States.

According to Scott Paul, executive director of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, over the last four years, Chinese glass producers have received $30 billion for various energy costs.

“What we’re trying to do is present some research to show the types of challenges the glass companies and glass works are up against, especially as it relates to subsidized production from China,” said Paul.
