Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions®, Inc. (TAOS; www.taosinc.com) today announced the company has joined the LCD TV Association, a global, not-for-profit marketing trade association chartered to inform, promote, improve and connect the entire LCD TV supply chain, as a sustaining member. As a recognized pioneer and market leader in ambient light sensing technology, TAOS, Inc. will work closely with the LCD TV Association and its member companies to encourage TV manufacturers to participate in the Association’s Green TV logo program. Launched in 2008, this program promotes “green technology” and global energy conservation, currently through the implementation of ambient light sensors in LCD TVs to automatically adjust TV set brightness in response to ambient room brightness, thereby reducing system power consumption by at least 30%.
The 237 million analog TVs operating in the US in 2006 consumed 53 terrawatt-hours (TWh) of electrical energy, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). This amounted to about 3.6% of all residential consumer electrical consumption in 2006. The primary analog TV in each household that year had an average screen size of 30 inches and consumed 115 watts of power. However, TV energy consumption is rising sharply because the average screen size is rising sharply. One dynamic of the flat-screen TV revolution is to make larger screen sizes practical. The 30-inch analog TV set in 2006 is likely to be replaced with an LCD-TV measuring 40 or 42 inches and consuming 200 to 250 watts. Energy Star, a joint program of the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy, says 10% of residential consumer electrical energy consumption is now used by TV sets. At about 10 cents per Kilowatt-hour, that would be over $5 billion in retail power costs.
“We are pleased to have TAOS join the association and help support the LCD TV industry, supply chain and Green TV logo program with their advanced technology,” noted Bruce Berkoff, Chairman of the LCD TV Association.
“Ambient light sensing technology provides automated display brightness control for mobile and AC-powered consumer electronics equipment,” said Jerry Koontz, TAOS, Inc. Director of Marketing. “LCD TVs, despite their rapidly increasing size, are no exception. TAOS welcomes the opportunity to join with the LCD TV Association to increase the awareness and promote the significant benefits of ambient light sensing technology to the LCD TV industry and the consumer.”
About the LCD TV Association
The LCD TV Association is a global, not-for-profit marketing trade association, formed to help the entire LCD supply chain and retail channel through to the end consumer via various communications tools, including speeches, interviews, sponsored research, as well as industry newsletters, meetings and standards settings – resulting in information distribution. Participating at the many industry trade and consumer shows around the world to help promote members’ interests, as well as create better LCD TVs for everyone. We encourage and engage in discussions to promote the industry overall, as well as helping to foster healthy competition and create better products with higher value propositions for consumers and retailers alike. The LCD TV Association can help fight the growing “specsmanship” in trade publications and refocus conversations on true image quality and understanding for consumers, as well as industrial design and “greenness,” such as less energy usage, less heavy metal waste, less packaging, more recyclability, etc. We want to help the whole LCD TV ecosystem to improve and thrive. For more information on the LCD TV Association, its membership or its “Green TV” logo program, please visit us on the web at www.LCDTVAssociation.org.
The LCD TV Association’s “Sustaining Member” companies currently include Amtran, Corning, DisplaySearch, Dolby Laboratories, the Flex Tech Alliance, Fusion Optix, LG Display, LG Electronics, LG Innotek, Merck KGaA, NOVA Chemicals, Quinn Pacific, RallyPoint, Retrovo, Supply Chain Alliance, TAOS, Unipixel, Veritas et Visus, Vizio and Westinghouse Digital Electronics.
