First and only glass container plants to receive the recognition
Verallia North America, a leading producer of glass containers in the United States, has had three of its manufacturing plants honored as the first and only in the industry to earn the 2010 ENERGY STAR® from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for superior energy performance.
The three plants, located in Dunkirk, Ind.; Milford, Mass.; and Port Allegany, Penn., have demonstrated best in class energy performance and, on average, use nearly 25 percent less energy when compared to similar plants across the country.
“We are very proud to operate the only three glass container plants in the country to be recognized for advanced energy performance,” said Joseph R. Grewe, President and CEO with Verallia North America. “This special recognition from the EPA validates our efforts and drives our commitment to reach new levels of achievement.”
Compared to average glass container plants, these ENERGY STAR certified facilities annually save 1,342,742 million Btus of energy and prevent approximately 61,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents, which is comparable to eliminating the emissions from almost 12,000 cars.
“The ENERGY STAR is the distinguishing mark of energy efficiency for glass container manufacturing plants in the United States and identifies these three plants with a status among the most energy-efficient based on their performance in EPA’s National Energy Performance Rating System,” said Jean Lupinacci, Director, Commercial and Industrial Branch for ENERGY STAR. “Verallia North America should be commended for their ability to reduce energy use and protect the environment through energy efficiency.”
Released in fall 2009, EPA’s ENERGY STAR Energy Performance Indicator for glass container plants has become an important tool in helping improve energy efficiency of the industry. Developed in coordination with U.S. glass manufacturers, ENERGY STAR Energy Performance Indicators allow companies to measure their energy performance against others in the industry and set informed improvement goals.
The plant awards are the third honor from the EPA that Verallia North America has been associated with this year. In January, the company was presented with ENERGY STAR certification for its distribution center in Fairfield, Calif. which is among the top 25 percent of high-energy performing facilities in the U.S.
In March, the company shared in the honor of the 2011 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award which was announced for parent company Saint-Gobain. All Saint-Gobain businesses in the U.S. were recognized for their leadership in conserving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The award marked the third consecutive year the EPA had honored Saint-Gobain and U.S. subsidiaries like Verallia North America.
In 2009 and 2010, the company was recognized as an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year. Companies which consistently meet the Partner of the Year criteria are presented with the Sustained Excellence Award. No other manufacturer of glass containers has ever been honored as a Partner of the Year or presented with a Sustained Excellence Award.

About ENERGY STAR® ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants associated with energy use. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 60 kinds of products as well as new homes and buildings. Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved $18 billion on their utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas equivalent to those of 34 million cars. Products, homes and buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR prevent emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA. For more information, go to
