With over 1,100 lots for our June 2013 Important Lamp & Glass Auction, this summer sale may be the finest overall selection we have ever offered. This auction also marks the retirement of one of the industry’s most revered lamp and glass authorities, Mr. Dudley Browne. Though Dudley will continue his relationship and affiliation with James D. Julia, Inc, he and his wife, Martha, will be retiring to the Spokane, WA area, where he was living before joining James D. Julia over 12 years ago. Dudley’s replacement, Chris MacKenzie, has been working with Dudley as we build up to this specific auction, and will be collaborating with Dudley and department veteran, Julie Killam, along with all of our consignors, collectors and dealers throughout the summer, in order to continue providing the industry’s best-in-class lamp and glass auctions. Starting off the 2013 summer auction shall be an exceptional collection of contemporary and antique paperweights featuring such artists as Clichy, Baccarat, Paul Stankard, St Louis, Rick Ayotte, Trabucco, Charles Kaziun, and many more. Even in today’s digital world, where unique pieces can be detected and procured by simply accessing one’s computer, Julia’s distinctive methodology of identifying and securing very rare and spectacular pieces is unsurpassed. Starting with some incredible cameo pieces from Galle, Daum, Burgun & Schverer, Webb and others, we are delighted to be offering a magnificent Daum monumental vase decorated in a frosty light winter blue, with over 20 blackbirds in various forms of flight. This 28” masterpiece is the first of its kind at Julia’s in over 48 years! A Daum rose vase with a heavily carved foot and uniquely wheel-carved roses will also be highlighted. From Galle, we are showcasing a wheel-carved marquetry vase with subtle orchids against a cream colored background. Another Galle highlight (of so many) is a wheel-carved scent bottle with butterflies and moths on a martele background. An extremely rare Burgun & Schverer vase with carved classical figures against a gilded background and beautifully enameled drapes, flowers and trim is certain to attract anyone seeking a Grecian look. Once again, Tiffany is well represented with an exquisite array of fine leaded lamps including a stunning geometric leaded chandelier with an inverted dome bordered in bands of iridescent Tiffany chunk jewels, finished with bronze rope twists and chain accents. This piece was featured in the revered source book, Tiffany Lamps and Metalworks by Alistair Duncan. Another rare find is an important Tiffany 12-light lily floor lamp with a gold dore lily pad base with 12 long and slender stems which terminate in a bouquet of iridescent lily shades. Another extremely rare lamp find is a Pairpoint Puffy Owl lamp and is only the eighth such example known to exist. Incidentally, Julia’s has auctioned two of the other known examples selling in the last decade. Other makers of lamps represented at this summer’s auction include Handel, Duffner & Kimberly, Suess, Wilkinson and more. Also included in the sale is a large selection of fine art glass from Tiffany, Lalique, Steuben, Moser, Quezal, Durand, Le Verre Francais, Mt. Washington, A. Walter, Argy Rousseau and D’Argental. You will also be impressed with our emerging offerings of antique and estate jewelry and silver from makers such as Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Gorham, Reed & Barton, Dominick & Haff and many more. As you can see, this is an extremely diverse offering that will certainly please collectors and hobbyists around the world!
