PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) announced that the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence in Ottawa, Ontario, a 2013 Canadian Green Building Award winner, was constructed with SOLARBAN(R) 60 glass.

Triple-glazed IGUs with PPG glass integrated into high-performance building envelope

The 199,000-square-foot school was designed as an instructional laboratory and educational center for training students in construction trades and sustainable design practices. Its environmental and building systems, including cutaways of several wall and floor assemblies, are exposed and equipped with built-in sensors so students can see how they work together to control temperature, humidity, air quality and structural load, and thereby promote sustainable design.

Solarban 60 glass was fabricated into triple-glazed insulating glass units (IGUs) that measure up to one full story in height and flood the school with daylight while providing R-8 insulating performance. They are part of a high-performance building envelope that incorporates R-32 walls and R-50 roofs.

The IGUs also are components in an integrated system that automatically controls lighting, daylighting and sunshades to balance illumination and solar heat gain. Together, the building envelope and related features enable the school to operate with 65 percent less energy than required for those built according to Canada’s Model National Energy Code for Buildings.

When paired with clear glass in a standard, 1-inch double-glazed IGU, Solarban 60 glass has visible light transmittance (VLT) of 70 percent, a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.38 and a light-to-solar gain (LSG) ratio of 1.85.
