Toronto builder to use mesh to combat falling glass concerns

A safety concern about falling glass from downtown condominiums in Toronto is prompting a developer to take precautionary measures. Concord Adex sent letters this month to residents of three condo towers, advising them of plans to immediately install protective mesh on their glass-paneled balconies as a safeguard, according to an April 16 Toronto Star report.

The decision comes after several incidents in which glass balcony lites fell to the ground from other Toronto condominiums last summer. Since Concord used the same glass supplier as the owner/developers of the troubled condos, it didn’t want to take any chances, Arash Beheshti, Concord’s vice-president of construction, is quoted as saying in the Toronto Star article.

Last August, developer Lanterra Developments announced that it would immediately remove the glass panels and railing systems in the affected buildings, and replace the tempered glass on the balconies with laminated glass.
