Post Time:Sep 14,2010Classify:Industry NewsView:215

Friends and colleagues will gatherthis evening in Las Vegas at GlassBuild America: The Glass, Window & Door Expo to honor longtime Glass Magazine salesman Don Johnson, who is retiring. An industry veteran, Johnson attended his first glass show in 1969.

"The first time I saw Don in action was at the interGLASSmetal/Fenestration show in 1991," recalls Glass Magazine Publisher Nicole Harris. "We were competitors back then, but what I saw holds true to this day: Don's a go-getter who gets results. He also makes true friends of many of his advertisers. That's no small feat when you consider he's mostly calling about deadlines and money."

When asked to share their thoughts about Johnson, his clients overwhelmingly have positive things to say:

"Don worked hard to make it easy for us to be his customer," says Amber Ballard, media director,Perry Ballard Inc., St. Joseph, Mich. "I always felt important to Don and to the magazine. I'll be missing his smile, his scooter jokes, his encouragement and mostly his advice and friendship."

"When I think of Don from a business perspective, the word 'mentor' comes along," says Matt Kottke, marketing support manager, Truth Hardware, Owatonna, Minn. "This may seem like an odd label for a sales guy toward a client, however, that is what he was to me. Don became someone who I call my friend, and that to me means the most. While I'm going to miss our visits during sales calls and at shows like this, the time is well overdue for[Don] to enjoy more quality time with family and friends. [He's] certainly earned it, and deserves it."
