The green building market, including nonresidential and residential construction, is likely to more than double from today’s $36-$49 billion to $96-$104 billion by 2013, according to a release of green building facts from the U.S. Green Building Council, Washington, D.C., the host of the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, Nov. 11-13 in Phoenix. Green building was 2 percent of nonresidential construction starts in 2005; 10-12 percent in 2008; and will grow to 20-25 percent by 2013, according to USGBC. During the next four years, green building will provide 7.9 million U.S. jobs and $554 billion to the U.S. economy, according to a report from USGBC and Booz Allen Hamilton, McLean, Va., released Nov. 11. Between 2000 and 2008, green construction contributed $178 billion to U.S. gross domestic product, and created or saved 2.4 million direct, indirect and induced jobs, according to the report. “Our goal is for the phrase ‘green building’ to become obsolete by making all building and retrofits green, and transforming every job in our industry into a green job,” said Rich Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chairman of USGBC. “This study validates the work that the 25,000 people gathered here at Greenbuild, and every member of our movement, do every day.” To download the full report, click here.
