PPG Industries Inc. will not be manufacturing glass for One World Trade Center in its South Middleton Township plant after the bid for the project was awarded to China's Beijing Glass.

Portions of the building formerly known as the Freedom Tower, which will replace the Twin Towers in New York destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, will be manufactured in China. PPG, based in Pittsburgh, bid this year to produce its ultra-clear Starphire glass for the first 20 floors of the tower's facade.

"This is going to be an iconic U.S. building that will have Chinese glass in it," said Jack Maurer, spokesman for PPG. "At the end of the day, this glass could be made in the United States," according to an April 2 report on pennlive.com.
