Southwall Technologies, Inc., the worldwide innovator of high performance, energy-saving films and glass products, announced the use of its energy-saving XIR laminated glass in the Shenzhen Airport Command and Information Center, a 10-story, 30,000 square meter control center at the Shenzhen International Airport in Shenzhen, China. Serving a metropolitan area of 12 million people, the airport's support facility houses information management, air traffic control and airport operations, and it will be the main commanding post for city officials during airport expansion projects and crisis response. The project was a landmark win for Shenzhen Kaisheng Building Materials Inc., Southwall's master distributor of XIR products in China, and was designed both to resist seasonal typhoon strength winds and to conserve energy by minimizing solar heat gain while maintaining a clear, non-reflective appearance.

"Visitors to the facility remark how comfortable the interior temperature is while needing only infrequent air conditioning," said Dr. Yisheng Dai, Southwall's Asia Pacific sales manager. "Building management selected Southwall's XIR laminated glass over competitive products as the most energy-efficient and most cost effective solution for their design objectives."

Over 10,000 square meters of exterior glass is used in the center's facade, with generic low-e glass being used in locations that are not directly exposed to the sun's heat. The facility cost 500 million RMB, or $60 million US dollars. According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, Shenzhen International Airport is the 5th busiest in the Peoples Republic serving over 20 million passengers in 2007.

Energy-saving XIR laminated glass products encapsulate Southwall's technologically advanced XIR heat rejecting film between two layers of PVB and glass. The finished product has a unique, low-reflectance appearance, allowing greater than 70% visible light transmittance while reflecting approximately 50% of ambient infrared heat. Glazed monolithically or combined into sealed insulating glass units, XIR film can be laminated with annealed, heat strengthened or tempered clear glass, or combined with tinted PVB and tinted glass, to meet the increasingly demanding green building requirements of the world's most energy-efficient commercial new construction and renovation projects.

XIR laminated glass is installed in such landmark buildings as the Magnocentro 26 Shopping Center in Mexico City, the newly constructed all-glass entrance to the historic railroad station in Strasbourg, France, and in the Kuwait Liberation Tower in Kuwait City, Kuwait.
