PPG Industries' Solarban 60 on 3rd Certified 'Living' Building - Analyst Blog

Post Time:May 13,2015Classify:Company NewsView:476

PPG Industries Inc. PPG declared that the Bullitt Center in Seattle has become the third building featuring PPG glass to match the world’s most meticulous green design, the LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE (“LBC”) construction standard.

This commercial building is made of triple-glazed insulating glass units (IGUs), incorporating two lites of PPG’s Solarban 60 low-emissivity glass to offer window system U-values as low as 0.17. The IGUs belong to an advanced curtain wall system, suitable for floor-to-ceiling windows that permit only 80% of sunlight. The interior and exterior doors of the building are also made of Solarban 60 glass.

The Starphire ultra-clear glass from PPG Industries has been used to create an exclusively designed staircase in the building. This staircase attracts entrants to climb the stairs instead of taking the lift by offering a panoramic view of Seattle. The glass has a thickness ranging from 3−19 millimeters and can generate visible light transmittance of up to 91%.

Moreover, the Solarban 60 glass was used mainly because of its capability to satisfy the building’s energy and daylighting demands. This variety of glass maintains a healthy balance among thermal performance, solar control and daylighting performance, making it a natural choice for the building.

The architectural glass products offered by PPG Industries are also used in two more certified buildings – The Phipps Conservatory Center for Sustainable Landscapes in Pittsburgh and the Energy Lab at Hawaii Preparatory Academy in Kamuela. There are only seven certified “living” buildings in the world. PPG Industries, being the first and only U.S. float glass manufacturer, has been awarded through the Cradle To Cradle Certified program for its products.

PPG Industries currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Better-ranked companies in the diversified chemical space include LyondellBasell Industries N.V. LYB, Trecora Resources TREC and Celanese Corporation CE. While LyondellBasell Industries and Trecora sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), Celanese carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
