A northeastern Pennsylvania glass plant has received $3.2 million in federal funds to develop a specialized process for making highly refined optical components for satellites, periscopes, lasers and other defense applications.

Republican U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania presented the money to Schott North America Inc. during a visit Monday toand de the research velopment plant in Duryea, near Scranton.

The financing will retain 20 jobs and add six to the staff of nearly 300 there.

Schott plans to improve its glass-smithing process which yields glass of varying qualities. As much as 20 percent is pure enough—about 1,000 times more pure than window glass—to use in the high-end applications.

Schott is hoping to increase the yield to 80 percent.
