Blenko Glass resumes partial production

New orders for hand-blown glass has injected a little life into a historic West Virginia glassmaker.

Blenko Glass Co. announced Monday that it was resuming partial production, roughly six weeks after a $500,000 gas bill forced it to shutter production and lay off 26 employees.

Assistant Vice President Katie Trippe says furnaces will be fired up by week's end for what she called a tentative return to business.

Employees will rotate shifts to give everyone a chance to work.

Most of the glass they'll be making will fill orders placed at January trade shows from florists and gift shops throughout the United States.

Since 1893, Blenko has been making brilliant colored, hand-blown products, including glass for the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
