A 100th birthday celebration at Gillinder Glass

Post Time:Nov 20,2012Classify:Company NewsView:474

Gillinder Glass arrived in Port Jervis in 1912 (after having been born in 1861 in Philadelphia to William T. Gillinder) and over the past 100 years has become known as the "Master of Light" because of its technological leadership in using lenses to control transmission direction and distance and enhance colors. Today, the company assumes a leadership role in developing lenses to meet the requirements for enhanced vision systems being created for today's pilots and tomorrow's astronauts.

In addition to guided tours of the factory with exhibits depicting its history and evolution, there will be live demonstrations throughout the day by guest glass blowers producing one-of-a-kind pieces, which will be available for purchase in the gift store.

The festivities will commence with Charlie Gillinder, sixth generation owner of Gillinder Glass, opening the new Art and Archive Gallery. The gallery, a creation of artist and company historian Professor Bernard, contains an exhibit of his works that blend historical and futuristic concepts in colorful and educational works of art. Sixteen of his creations, suitable for framing, have been assembled into a 2013 calendar commemorating the 100 years of Gillinder Glass in Port Jervis. The calendars will be available for $6.50, and Bernard will be on hand to autograph the calendars.
