Fused Glass class offered

Save | ESCANABA - Celebrate the return of spring with a chance to design and create a lovely piece of jewelry or a glass tile with fused glass. While assembling their creation, participants will learn about the ancient art of glass fusing as well as elements of design, the dos and don'ts of fusing, and kiln tips.

Beth Cox, area glass artist, will teach the class on Saturday, April 24, from 1-3 p.m. at The Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer, 314 Main Street in Manistique. Aimed at teens and adults, the class will cost $50 and will be limited to 15 participants. All materials, tools, and off-site kiln firing are included in this fee, and no glass cutting experience is necessary.

Cox started her glass working career when she took a class in traditional stained glass with Hayward, California's Adult Education Program in 1978 and later continued her studies at the famed Fenton Glass Studio in Oakland, Calif. In 1981, she began blowing glass and teaching full time.

In 1996, she and her partner moved their glass studio from California to family land in Perronville, where she opened Perronville Glass Works and also began work as a demonstrating artist for the Bristol Renaissance Fair and the Fort Lauderdale Renaissance Fair, a job which continued for three seasons.

By now, Cox has over 30 years of experience with all forms of glass work. She is currently on the faculty of Bay de Noc Community College where she teaches glass mold making. She also teaches glass blowing at the historic U.P. Steam and Gas Village in Escanaba.

Other big parts of her life include restoring old stained glass windows, creating new ones, and teaching in other locations nation wide. Her glass paperweights are included in the Bergstrom-Mahler Paperweight Museum in Neenah, Wis., and her fused and cast glass pieces are for sale in numerous galleries and can be found in many private collections.
