Scheuten supplies glass for roof-covering at Rotterdam Centraal Station

Scheuten Glass, Netherlands, supplied 30,000square meters of glass in a variety of compositions for the roof-covering of Rotterdam’s Centraal Station, according to a Jan. 25 release. In 2007, the original station was closed and the demolition work started. The revamped station will be complete in the beginning of 2013.

The glass roof-covering is part of the reconstruction and modernization of the Central Station and its surroundings. Light, heat from the sun, and a modern, contemporary design constitute significant elements in architect Jan Benthem’s design. To this end, Scheutensupplied laminated glass in three different compositions. The glass came from the modern float glass factory in Osterweddingen, Germany, where the company manufactures extra-clear glass. In addition, the glass has a special coating that ensures optimum use of heat from the sun. The glass is also supplied with a silk-screen print, providing a sleek and modern appearance.

"Due to its size and the logistics involved, this roof-covering is an exceedingly prestigious project," said Roy van Leeuwen, commercial manager, Scheuten Glass, in the release. "The train timetables severely restrict the time available for assembly work. This makes complete and flawless delivery a requirement. Thanks to the versatility of our products, we were capable of offering a suitable solution. And so, we are very happy that we have been able to perform this sizeable project for Licotec."
